By Gregg Ellis
OK. Three hours of sleep and five cups of coffee later, I'll try to provide a simple analysis.
Offensive line: Much, much improved. And remember, LSU's front is pretty impressive. They gave the quarterback time to throw and they opened some holes for Anthony Dixon.
RB: Anthony Dixon looked good, just didn't get enough touches. I thought State abandoned the running game too soon.
WR: Hard to tell, because they didn't get enough opportunities to make catches. And I'll say this, Tony Burks has to be involved. A lot. I don't care if he comes to practice naked and wearing an Ole Miss helmet. He needs to start and he needs to be the focal point. Period.
QB: Michael Henig was awful. He looked bad in the scrimmages and he was deplorable against LSU. But, there really aren't other options. Wesley Carroll isn't ready and Josh Riddell was suspended. Croom said Riddell's actions were selfish, and he's right. I'll say this, if Henig doesn't improve, this team will struggle to win more than one game.
DL: Slow start but recovered nicely. There's still a lot of room for improvement. But at least you see the talent, especially with Cortez McCraney. I thought they got good pressure on the quarterback.
LB: Dominic Douglas is good. Really good. Jamar Chaney had a good game, as did Gabe O'Neal.
DB: Once they learn to cover the underneath stuff, they'll be OK. I thought they did nicely with the long stuff.
Special teams: Blake McAdams was OK. No 9-yard shanks, which is an improvement. We never saw Adam Carlson, so I can't offer an opinion.
Coaching: I can't rip into Sly for this one. He wasn't the one making bad passes. However, he better hit the recruiting trail and find a quarterback. Remember, Chris Garrett is only a junior. But then again, with 10 starters returning on offense, there shouldn't have been a shutout. Don't you just love the West Coast offense?
Final note: MSU better beat Tulane. It's a must-win and if they lose again, a majority of the fanbase will be gone. And who's to blame 'em.
Oh, and you can't have seven turnovers and beat anyone. Didn't MSU learn that lesson against Maine? Apparently not.
And last, but not least, I was shocked at Croom's quote that he didn't realize how athletic Matt Flynn was. As my sports editor John Pitts noted, he should have read the preseason magazines because that was how Flynn was described in all of them.
Go figure. |

Can't improve on that, any of it, though I thought he said some of the PLAYERS did not realize how athletic he was (though it's HIS job to tell them).
Whatever.
Josh Riddell? It's on you.

Do we not have enough talent to score? This WCO is pathetic and it was obvious that Henig was not prepared. I thought Croom and McCorvey were gonna finally be able to run the offense the way it was suppose to be run? The playcalling was poor. I wasn't expecting to win, but I was expecting much more. Can we let Ellis be the head coach? It's apparent that he's the only coach worthy of the money he's paid
Can you be more specific. I must admit, I wasn't too bothered by it, although I thought they abandoned the running game too soon. But heck, when every drive ends with a turnover, it's hard to get into any type of rhythm.

Not running the ball is what I meant by the play calling.

Just looked at one of your past posts. It had a quote from Coach Croom stating that he'd have to look at Riddell's conduct on and off the field before he made a decision about the lenght of his suspension. I'm guessing that Riddell's actions may be at an acceptable enough level to allow him back on the field. Hopefully he'll get a chance at Tulane. If he doesn't start, Henig gets 1 quarter maximum to redeem himself. And if Henigs bid at redemption is unsuccessful, then Riddell better be given the nod, or else Sly will be given the boot!

Well as ugly and embarrassing as that game was, i did see some good things out there. I was really impressed with our D-line and our linebackers. They both played very solid throughout the massacre. I don't think they ever paid attention to the scoreboard and just kept at it. Our DB's did pretty well. Like you said Gregg, they never did give up the big play but they did get handled on all the underneath stuff. I thought we tackled well and even our special teams covered the punts and the TWO kickoffs we actually got pretty well. I don't know. Maybe i'm just in the state of mind where i'm trying to find all the positive after something a game like that. I really don't think we have anything to worry about with Tulane. I figure Riddell will be in the game sometime in the 2nd quarter. Our defense will take care of business and we will win by a couple scores. Oh and yes i will admit it, i underestimated LSU big time. I knew they were good. But they were really good. Given, Henig did make them look better than they should of looked. Especially Fabio back there, who had 3 picks himself. But man were they FAST. Flynn impressed me a lot, too. Oh well, i guess there's always next year. Haha.

They didn't impress me. 4 picks in the first half could have been touchdowns in our favor. LSU is way overrated, we are just that bad. Hard to win when the defense stays on the field the whole game. Also Florida couldn't beat Middle Tennesse St. with 7 turnovers!!!!!!

Florida could beat MTSU with 10 turnovers. It is called having a real OFFENSE and thoroughly outclassing your opponent. A Croom led MSU offense can do neither against ANYONE. Hence the Maine debacle and the 16 point overtime win against UAB.

I doubt it. Nobody could win if everytime you turned it over the other team scored!! No matter if they had a real offense or not. But I do have to say that we have no spark plug, which would be the quaterback. No spark no win.

I didn't want to start a debate over whether LSU was that good or not. Henig is HORRIBLE and probably could not play at the JUCO level. LSU's defense is great whether you admit it or not. Just watch them next Saturday against VA Tech. VT is a very good, defensive oriented team with a questionable quarterback (Sean Glennon I think?) I'll go ahead and say that they smother him and he throws a couple picks and LSU beats them handily. I'm not taking up for Henig by any stretch. He should not start again for us. He's had his chance to prove himself time and time again. He can't cut it. Last night's game can not be blamed on Croom, though. The only mistake he may have made was just that he let him play through the 3rd quarter. Croom's had faith in him for what 3 years now? Now Riddell is coincidentally reinstated. Fat chance. Croom realizes that even as good as LSU is, Henig can't compete at this level. Riddell will start the Auburn game in two weeks. Now, fire away at me.

Agree. But, he'll see action against Tulane. Hopefully early.

Henig has no leadership at all plus he is dumb. By the way I don't care for Woody McCorvey but Croom is calling the plays. I would start Riddell and only put Henig in if Riddell didn't get it done.

Croom is not calling the plays. If he was, you would know it. The only game that he has called the plays was against Florida in 04 and that was a win.

Burning Questions... 1.How many teams in 1AA would we lose to? If App. St. can handle Michigan like that I'm sure they would beat us by 20
2.When will we scrap the Wac Coast Offense? Everyone else in college has gone to the spread and it seems to be unstoppable for everyone that runs it Bear Bryant football is dead
3.Why are we getting constantly out-recruited by the likes of South Florida,Appalachian St., and Conf USA teams like Southern, not to mention the teams in our own conference?
4.Why did McCorvey call that fade rout to Lance Long insead of all those tall receivers over there on the sideline?
5.How can you have a Wac Coast Offense without throwing any 5 or 6 yard hitches and 1 screen pass?
6. Why is Woody McCorvey both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, are we too cheap to pay for a quarterbacks coach?
7. I'm convinced that McCorvey does not know how teach quarterbacks anything since he was an option style quarterback at Alabama State, neither he nor Henig know what they should be looking at pre or during the snap
8. I've said time and again, that Croom is one sexy offense away from being a great coach. Will he let his friendships, which are unprofessional sink his own ship? Or will he do what good leaders do, and diagnose the problem and correct the problem, or will he let everyone suffer by giving On-the-job training on how to be an offensive coordinator in the SEC?
9.Why doesn't recognize the personnel that they have or the possible matchups or mismatches that could be created? Did we not have any plays designed to isolate Craig Steltz one on one with anyone with speed or Burks?
10.Speaking of Burks, why did we recruit him if we are not willing to look his way? Did we not understand that he had the height advantage on both LSU corners? Why don't use Burks on those 5 and 6 yard hitches?
